Work is work; the reason for it being called work is because it is not leisure. I must say I am happy with this work though; gone are the never ending long hours. If I was being paid in my last position for effort put in I should have been earning twice as much as I was. I have no problem with the amount I am receiving here (more would always be nice), although some do which I don’t fully understand. I also don’t have too many problems with the content or structure of the programs. It is different than what I am used to, but at the same time it is not as bad as what many seem to think. There are things I agree with, and other things I don’t... sounds like work to me.
The students are the biggest bonus to this new job. They are friendly and respectful ... and within the environment they are provided they do try (maybe not their best, but the effort they do put in is evident).
I have seen a number of comments about the “system” on various forums but really it is not much different from any other educational system I am aware of. Maybe some people are a little out of touch with the reality of what is happening in the world of tertiary education... then again maybe it is me who is a little out of touch. The reality of it is some fit in and some try to change things. I am more than happy to fit in and make minor changes for myself along the way when I have been here long enough to fully understand what it is I am trying to change.
