Two things you notice about the students during Ramadan is they look really tired and they laugh a lot. The reason for tiredness is quite simple; many of them stay up until the early hours of the morning. I think the reason they laugh a lot is not only because they are tired though, but also because of the bond they have during the month of fasting. They are all going through the same experience and support each other through the lack of caffeine and nicotine.
Most classes begin with a deathly silence peppered with the odd “salaam” as another joins the group, but normally it doesn’t take too long until someone starts singing or gets the giggles. This normally leads to a number of overtired young men just basically enjoying each others company and making the most out of the fact they are stuck together in a room.
Another thing that makes me smile is I have heard quite a few of them complaining about being “ssooooo hungry”, or “dying for a smoke”. I guess this is them seeing the funny side of their lives, because I know not one of them would break their fasting before Iftar each night. I can’t even begin to imagine what it must be like to go to work for 3-5 hours and then spend another 3 at college during Ramadan.
