Statistics are statistics and sometimes you can twist and mould them to say many things depending on your own personal agenda, but some statistics I think speak for themselves. We were talking about this the other day at work and it made me think a little.
Averaged out over a year the current approximate daily US figures are:
90 Rapes (I am guessing these are only the reported ones)
80 Suicides (possibly only self inflicted, and not assisted)
41 Murders (not sure if this includes "manslaughter")
39 Aggravated Assaults (I think these are only the reported ones)
As a matter of interest:
2.5 US service members killed in Iraq or Afghanistan (both hostile and non-hostile)
14 US service members wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan (not including non-hostile injuries)
Keep in mind these are DAILY figures... BUT (and there is always one of those), the per capita rates for all countries show a bit of a different picture which I guess is something. The US ranks:
#9 Rapes
#46 Suicides
#24 Murders
#6 Aggravated Assaults
So although media representation may say one, the US is definitely not the most dangerous place on Earth, but I think I can understand why some may think it is all a little scary.
What I find far scarier is where Australia Ranks (although once again it is important to remember that I am guessing these are “reported” statistics):
#3 Rapes
#33 Suicides
#43 Murders
#10 Aggravated Assaults
What is wrong with the world!
