One thing about small town USA... (well, small town MN) is that it is what you expect. No huge glass building in the middle of town, no sand dunes or camels; just relatively quiet streets with friendly folk. Minnesota maybe full of lakes, but really small town MN seems to be for want of a better word... "pretty". But I really believe that only covers part of it... it also seems to be suffering a little. Maybe you get too used to seeing only a certain portion of the community in the UAE who may be low-paid but still seem happy and content with their lot in life. Or maybe because people in the UAE are far more content with their "temporary" lot in life...
I like small town Minnesota... I like Albert Lea... it is "pretty" and I suppose it really is so far removed from what we are used to that there isn't much about it not to like. It has "old stuff", it looks like something from all those US television shows and documentaries... there is something familiar yet foreign about it.
Another thing you notice is how big this place is. Not the towns so much, probably not even the state... but the country. It really is a big place and takes time to get everywhere... It is very different from spending a hour to drive across an entire country that's for sure. Should be used to it after spending so many years in Australia, but I guess it doesn't take long to forget to feeling of driving distances.
Anyway, no matter what anyone says, Southern Minnesota is a nice place to refresh the batteries, breathe in the air and pass the (cool) summer days away exploring!
