Well semester 1 is finally over for me, and it has been a long long LONG semester! Don’t get me wrong though; there have been lots of short breaks, so 21 weeks really hasn’t been 21 weeks at all. It just seems every time you tried to get into a rhythm there is another holiday, and add in Ramadan; there were just too many disruptions. Students suffer and were really worn out… even more so the ones that lack motivation in the first place.
At the end of the day I still can’t work out whether an incredibly long semester with lots of breaks here is any more stressful than the old semesters at Griffith. Maybe I’ll leave any decision about that until the end of my first “normal” full semester. So a 2 week break then 19 weeks with only one long weekend (wonder why they don’t have mid-sem breaks!).
But it has been a good semester with some great students. I think they learned something valuable. Plus add to that we have travelled around most of the country, K’s mum came for a visit, and we continue to settle in to life here. So all’s well!

Just wait until next year! Ramadan seems to be starting around the beginning of the school year. So much for starting off the year w/ a bang...
