One thing when you have been here a little while (and our “while” is very little), is you forget about differences. That is the differences in culture and backgrounds between people and races. Well not everyone does, because there are classes here but I think it is easy to blur the lines. One thing I will not get used to is the Sir Lankan fix-it guys and Indian security men displaying what I call “meek” behaviour towards me at work. I also don’t think I will ever enjoy being called “sir” or “boss”. Of course I accept it as a sign of respect, but I guess I am just used to a little more equality in the workplace.
I digress...
One difference between Australian and Emirati students popped up last week when a group of young guys were gathering around a laptop looking at pictures (when they should have been working of course). They told me this was something “I had to see”, which I naturally thought would be something to do with A) Football, B) Cars, or C) The Desert (and cars). I was pleasantly surprised to see they were looking through photos of fancy cakes. Not just the usual “fancy cakes” of course, but ones resembling famous buildings, trees and flowers, animals, and any number of other things. While I wasn’t quite sure about the “you HAVE to see this, Sir” value of these cakes I could appreciate the fact that in all my years at university in Australia, no one had ever tried to show me pictures of bakery products!
I just had a thought... maybe my classes are so boring they are turning to photos of bakery goods for entertainment!!!
